Chinese New Year is one of the most important celebrations for Chinese People across the globe. It is a time for families to reunite, as well as honour deities and ancestors. According to Chinese folktale, the Chinese Dragon is used to scare away a ferocious monster named “Nian” and believed to bring good luck in the new year.

The reverse of the coin features a coloured representation of a Chinese Dragon with fireworks in the background. Also included in the design are the Chinese Characters 新年快乐 a common phrase said to wish one a Happy New Year, and The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark.
